Handy when abroad

Last summer spent a couple of months in Europe part for training part for sight seeing. Skype was what got me in contact with my family and friends. Used the iPhone app over WiFi (never roaming!) and could talk/chat all day with only minor issues. Now I'm using it to keep contact with the family/friends back in UK/Italy/Spain/Greece.. very cheap to call their landlines/mobiles when we can't hook up online.

Best Price: Free :)

When used to connect with other Skype users, who doesn't know or use Skype these days eh? It's free; the application has been changing for the last few years you can also Chat or send TXT messages or call landlines or mobiles. Although for all that you need credit. It's very inexpensive but sometimes call quality is not the best thus I would not pay for that type of quality and the Skype ready phones are gnerally speaking expensive. For that reason I can't give it 5-star rating but otherwise it's a very neat free tool.

Video Chat

Started using Skype at work a few years back on my laptop to connect with remote offices. Quickly began using with my family too for Video chat. For now only used with my computer, but I've seen some TVs now have Skype embedded so hope to use those too soon enough.

Skype was first released in 2003; changing the voice over IP landscape ever since. By the time Microsoft bought it had grown to have more than 600 million users supporting multiple platforms. Through 2013 Microsoft has planned to phase out their own Windows Live Messenger and replace it with Skype. While by no means is a Phone Replacement it does work quite well as a Home Phone Alternative addition. Similarly, as the microwave oven does not replace a traditional stove oven.

This may be the ideal extra line for being connected with family overseas, home office line or the student phone line, companion. There are cordless phones that are Skype-ready or you can buy the adapter (Skype's ATA). Plans vary, you can get from unlimited Canada/US calling to 400 minutes international calling to great low rates by buying credits.

Always skype to skype calls are free + Skype is supported in multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Blackberry & Smart TVs) making it a very appealing choice due to the fact most people nowadays connects to the net in more than one form.

While Skype is one of instant message and voice-calling dialer favorites apps for many; the market has certainly evolved. There are many other and new providers such as Rebtel that may offer a cheaper and more complete solutions for your international calling needs.
