This Internet Service Provider is no Longer Operating.

IKalTek Services Ltd is a Canadian internet service provider which was formed in April of 2011. IKalTek provides residential broadband wireless internet packages to the Durham region of Ontario including Oshawa and Newcastle. IKalTek is 100% Canadian owned and operated.

In our review of IKalTek, we will take a look at the residential internet services they provide and try to determine the actual cost including any hidden fees and surcharges.

IKalTek has only one package available for residential high-speed internet. The cost is $34.99 per month and includes 100 GB of data usage and download speeds of up to 5 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 512 Kbps.

IKalTek does not charge overage charges and instead uses the practice known as throttling which simply slows your connection to slower speeds (1.5 Mbps download speeds and 128 kb upload speeds). We always prefer this method over additional charges on our bill. Unfortunately, it does not state anywhere on the site whether there is a contractual obligation or not. Normally when it is not listed, it means that there is a contract requirement.

iKalTek doesn’t have many options with only one residential package. However, the package is reasonable with 100 GB of data and decent speeds. The price of $34.99 is also very reasonable. We can find no mention of the actual cost of the installation and site survey on their website anywhere; however, the terms and conditions state that the price does not include installation fees. This indicates to us that the installation fee and site survey are all going to be a separate charge and will vary on a case-by-case basis.

In IKalTek’s terms and conditions, we find a mention of the installation charges: “Additional install charges not indicated on our website may be required for extra equipment in special case installations. The customer is responsible for these charges and will be informed of these changes either verbally or electronically before the work will be done.”

They do list some other charges that could come up. For instance, any account which is delinquent will receive a $5 or 2% charge, whichever is greater. There is a $25.00 administration fee which is charged if the customer makes any account changes within the first month of service, such as changing a phone number.

IKalTek has a very limited amount of information on their website. In our review of IKalTek, we like what we see but we just don’t see much. It is always a red flag when a company does not fully state what the charges are for their services including installation fees, site survey fees, etc. Having said that, IKalTek’s one residential plan at $34.99 is reasonably priced. We just need further information on the additional costs.
