Reply to: Yak
I was looking for some specific information regarding yak.ca and a google search included this site/page. I was rather surprised to see some of the very negative experiences so decided to share mine.

I probably drove the support staff at yak crazy because of how many times I called in trying to get things right. I previously was getting VoIP from another provider and was leaving that company so I had many concerns about how I would be able to seamlessly move over to Yak residential VoIP phone service. I wanted to also port my old phone number.

I found the yak support staff to be outstanding. I never had to wait on the phone to speak to anyone and any email communication I had was addressed within 20 or 30 minutes. If I was left unclear about an email reply a phone call thereafter resolved it immediately.

Since I live in a rural area I am extremely limited in the type of Internet service I can get. My previous provider was a radio based setup that pulled a radio signal from a tower to a dish and modem. In today's terms it was pretty slow. My new provider is able to offer much higher speeds which has definitely helped but I think a key for me was paying an extra ten bucks and getting a Static IP address for my setup.

I decided to purchase the Cisco VoIP device and it arrived before I actually had switched over all my services so I set up a softphone on my computer using yak's recommended software. It was easy peasy to set up and I was able to make and receive calls sitting at the computer. I have since disabled the softphone.

Bottom line for me is that I believe the quality of your VoIP relies almost entirely on the quality of the Internet service coming in to your location along with how the device is set up in relation to home routers and networks. If you are in a location that has limited Internet bandwidth *and* you have other devices that are using up bandwidth resources in only makes sense that something in the chain has to suffer. I know from experience that it can be extremely frustrating if the particular lag is affecting the one thing you really need to be using at that moment.

For me, between my ISP and yak they were both excellent in helping me with a successful transition that has left me with great Internet and (so far, knock wood) perfect VoIP.

As I said, I live in a rural area with "fixed wireless" Internet service and the yak setup has been working perfectly and I would easily recommend it.
